Looking for Lowry

Tate Britain will show Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life, the first major exhibition in a public institution since the artist’s death in 1976.

At Tate Britain, Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life results from an invitation extended to the distinguished art historians T J Clark and Anne M Wagner to reappraise Lowry for a new, extended audience. Including works by Lowry from Tate Collection and significant loans, the exhibition will re-assess his contribution as part of a wider art history, showing how he engaged fruitfully with the French tradition, and will argue for his achievement as Britain’s pre-eminent painter of the industrial city.

“LOOKING FOR LOWRY” the film directed by Margy Kinmonth, as seen on ITV’s Perspectives, stars Ian McKellen, Noel Gallager and Dame Paula Rego, and features over 120 works by the artist. Available to buy on DVD.

MAUREEN MURRAY attended the opening of master colourist PHILIP SUTTON R.A.’s new exhibition of vibrant paintings and sketches, which runs from 3 May to 3 June 2012 at THE RICHMOND HILL GALLERY. The exhibition has an accompanying book of his recent work on location in Crete and a DVD by Jaz Allen Sutton and Maria Nova Lopez.

MAUREEN MURRAY was invited as a “Role Model” Guest at UKRC‘s recent “Inspiring Women’s Enterprise” workshop in London funded by the Skillset TV Skills Fund and led by Vanessa Boon of Energise and Fiona McPhail of McPhail Watmore Associates. UKRC is the UK’s lead organisation for the provision of advice, services and policy consultation to build gender equality and diversity in science, engineering and technology.

Maureen Murray joined Mike Leigh, Wolfgang Suschitzky and a host of industry professionals as guests at the British film industry’s Celebration of Film at Tate Modern on 22 February 2012.

Held by The British Society of Cinematographers, the Guild of British Camera Technicians, Imago and the Production Guild of Great Britain, the event was addressed by Tacita Dean, who argued for the continuing presence of film as a medium for artistic expression.

KEN RUSSELL’s film masterpiece “Song of Summer” will receive a special screening at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on Sunday 29 January to commemorate Russell’s recent death aged 84. MAUREEN MURRAY, who produced seven films for Ken Russell and worked with him on several more, will be attending with his widow Lisi and many of Ken’s former colleagues.

Ken appears in Foxtrot’s film “Nutcracker Story“, directed by MARGY KINMONTH and Executive Produced by MAUREEN MURRAY and MELVYN BRAGG.

The Pond by Lowry

LOWRY’s painting THE POND was used as Harold Wilson’s Downing Street Christmas Card.

This huge painting has been brought out of the Tate Store for a special showing in a brand new Lowry exhibition at The Djanogly Gallery, The Lakeside Arts Centre, University Park, Nottingham.

Margy Kinmonth’s film “Looking for Lowry” was screened there this week.

The film can also be viewed on British Airways long haul flights, a bit of a first for Lowry who never travelled outside the UK.
